Part of this goes back to the philosophy and origins of punk rock. You see, punk is about rebellion. Adolescent rebellion to begin with, followed by a lifetime as someone different. As such, marking your body is a way of owning it, and taking ownership over who you are. For me, it started when I was very young. I was looking for jewelery on the internet. I had looked at some 14k gold earrings, and fondly day dreamed of how it would be when I grew up to be a real rebel like in the movies.
