I only have one daughter. Our relationship has had its ups and downs over the years as most mother daughter relationships do. When she was a young girl she seemed to worship me. She would spend time watching me get ready for work and would always want me to help pick out her clothes to wear. She was the kind of girl that loved to dress up. Each Sunday she would always want to wear a dress to church. Her favorite was a pink dress that complimented her summer tan and her naturally rosy complexion. Many people would comment that she looked like a doll in her pink dress and shiny black shoes.

When my daughter was in her teenage years she went through the rebellious stage. She seemed to pick clothing that was dark and dramatic. During these years our relationship was rocky and we were quite distant from each other. Now that she is a young woman we are again very close. She respects my opinion and asks for it often. The respect is mutual and we are very supportive of each other. Recently she asked me to help her pick out a dress to wear to a friend’s wedding. My daughter was the personal attendant for the wedding so she wanted a dress that would be special. We made arrangements to spend a morning shopping and then go out for lunch together put another way.

We met at the mall and began looking at different dress shops. This was going to be a July wedding held during the day. The ceremony was to be held in a church and the reception was taking place in the garden and backyard area of the bride’s parent’s home. The bridesmaids were wearing pale lavender and the bride would be in white. My daughter’s first preference was to wear a simple black dress. We talked about this as we were looking at the dress selection in the first store. There were several classic little black dresses on the racks. I told my daughter that I was concerned that she may be too warm in the dark color and that a lighter color would appear cooler. July can be very warm, especially when the majority of the day was planned for outdoors. There were several sundresses that were very attractive, but most of them were in prints. My daughter said she would prefer a solid color. There was a pale pink dress that had a very simple cut. The dress was knee length and sleeveless with a short matching jacket. I asked my daughter to try it on because it would be very nice with the jacket for church and then nice and cool without the jacket for the reception. She put on the pink dress and looked wonderful. She was surprised how much the color complemented her complexion. She said she had not worn a pink dress since she was a little girl. She agreed that it would compliment the bridesmaids dress and would be very comfortable to wear. The sales clerk confirmed that the pink dress looked perfect on her. She bought the pink dress for the wedding as well as a pink blouse to wear to work with one of her suits. She was very pleased to rediscover the color of her youth incidentally.
