If you were a teenager in the eighties, chances are you owned a pair of leg warmers. This odd fashion item had its introduction to the world through dancers, who would wear them to keep their legs warm when going to and from dance class or to hold in the heat before their leg muscles were properly warmed up during practice. But just like ballet style shoes, which were also popular in the eighties and originated from the shoes worn by ballet dancers, leg warmers slowly leaked out of the dance studio and onto the streets of every city in America.

There were many strange fashion trends created in the eighties. Some unforgettable trends include stirrup pants, big hair and jelly shoes.
